The Collierville Planning staff often gets questions from agents about sign permits, where signs can be placed and how large they can be. Permits are not required for real estate signs except for signs on active construction sites. Even though a permit may not be required, such signs must comply with Town regulations. Signs in the Town of Collierville are regulated by §151.170 – 151.183 of the Zoning Ordinance. Click here for a one-page summary of Collierville's real estate signage regulations.

One common question/complaint Collierville officials receive is about open house signage. The following signage types, often associated with real estate open houses, are prohibited in the Town of Collierville per §151.174.

1. Signs placed along a public street or on public property

Posting any signage on public property or within the public street "right-of-way" is not allowed. To avoid issues, place “open house” and similar signs at least 10 feet back from the edge of the curb (or edge of pavement for rural roadways) and make sure you have the permission of the property owner before putting such a sign on their property. All prohibited signage will be removed.

2. Signs blocking public street signs

Signs interfering with or blocking the visibility of public signs (street name signs, traffic control signs, etc.) are not permitted.

3. Inflatable animated characters, lighter-than-air devices or similar balloon-type devices (including balloons)

Not permitted.

The Town of Collierville’s Codes Division is tasked with the responsibility of enforcing these sign regulations and will address any violations. If you have any questions regarding real estate signage, please feel contact the Planning Division at planning@colliervilletn.gov or 901-457-2360. We will be happy to assist you!
